How 18 semi-finalists of this year’s edition of the Gulder Ultimate Search (GUS V) emerged at the Sea School in Apapa, Lagos, was unveiled last night on popular TV stations and cable networks across Africa and beyond.

The training and selection exercise started with climbing and walking on round objects like woods and ropes to strike a balance and crawling, jumping and scaling through obstacles and barriers, to taking a plunge into the deep sea from the very height of a stationary ship on a life jacket.

It equally featured other fitness and body building exercises to determine the strength, mental and physical ability of the applicants to withstand the rough and tough terrain of Awgu Hills and jungles where this year’s edition of the GUS is to be staged. Some of the applicants fumbled, some wobbled, fall and rise again to continue with the exercises just to win a space to contest the GUS.

Some even chickened out from performing the exercises, particularly taking the high plunge into the big sea. But the medical team was on hand to save any arising situation. It was however  fun as they sang: I do like this, I do like that and I balance well, to the excitement of millions of audience back home during some of the exercises.

The heart gripping moment came when the Presenter, turned up to call out the number tag of 18 candidates selected at the end for the final selections. Bob Manuel indeed created incredible suspense and very anxious moments reeling out the numbers one after the other. It was indeed an emotional moment of sadness and joy.

Some of the candidates celebrated their success even rolling out hot tears, while some jumped for joy. For the Ohakwe family of three, a twin brother and their elder sister, in the race, it was a revealing moment of win some and lose some. One of the twin brothers was picked along with the elder sister, while the other was dropped.
